He was born into a deeply religious Kashmiri family, and was the eldest of five siblings. His father, Shaikh Nur Muhammad, was a successful tailor. Following the custom of the time, he was married, at the age of fifteen, to Karim Bibi who was the daughter of a famous physician. Allama Iqbal and Karim Bibi had two children together.
